When I Made This Mistake, It Stole My Time and Energy

I stand by my platform which is that we can’t accomplish our goals if we don’t have time. We need to have time and manage our mind before we can make our goals a reality.

Last week, I made a mistake. I ended up using a tool of my friend’s in my Mastermind Group. She reached out to me, asking if I had used it without permission, which I had. I haven’t thought to call her. I hadn’t thought to ask permission. Instead of simply messaging her back on Facebook, I arranged to have a phone call.

Taking Responsibility Can Be Scary

I wanted to act on it right away. I felt personally responsible and wanted to make sure that I took this situation seriously. It’s easy to wait to act on apologizing or admitting responsibility for a mistake. We want to discuss what happened with everyone and seek out advice on how to go about handling it. In my experience, it’s always been better to own up to the mistake and make reparations.

In this specific situation, she called me back. I apologized, and we worked through it. We also discussed how to collaborate on future projects. If I had waited to call or act on taking responsibility this could have gone an entirely different way. She could have thought that I didn’t take the situation seriously or that I didn’t care. I also would have wasted tons of time, just trying to process the situation.

Processing Can Steal Your Time

In the past, I would have discussed this situation with everyone. I would have talked to my husband that night, talked to a few friends, or even made an appointment with my life coach. I’d rehash the details and justify it to myself. Obsessing over the right words. Feeling the pit in my stomach for days over the situation.

But is that worth my time?

Do I have the time to dedicate to mulling things over on repeat?

I really don’t, and neither do you. In our guts, we usually know what the right thing to do it. Mistakes are bound to happen when we are going through life, whether in our business or personal lives. Nobody's perfect and we can’t control everything. What we can control is how we handle these situations.

Do You Have the Mental Space To Reach Your Goals?

Overthinking situations like this steals our time and energy, but how much is up to us entirely. We can make decisions that keep us from being distracted from the things that we want to accomplish and the goals that we’d like to achieve. In order to achieve success, we need to keep our minds open. When we start filling in the blanks with a bunch of anxious thoughts, we leave less room in our minds to be open to new possibilities and solutions to challenges.

I ask all of you to create more time and energy by merely dealing with the shit when it happens. Sometimes that means you have to say “I’m sorry” and have a conversation. If you have ever been in this situation, please let me know!
