Don’t Let Imposter Syndrome Take Over

Feel like you’re behind so you can’t start? You don't know enough YET, so you're an imposter...

Who are you to start a business? To teach something to others?

Oh my gaaaahd, I struggle with this too. And today,

I channeled my mentor teacher from 20 years ago...

My 29-year-old self pops up when I feel this way! Take the advice that got me through teaching Shakespeare to high school seniors!

Imposter Syndrome

There are so many women that I meet that want to get their business started, but they think that they aren’t good enough. Imposter syndrome gets to the best of us and there is no denying it. You feel like you can’t talk about something because you aren’t “the best” or there are people out there that are “doing it better”. But here’s the thing, there are people out there that know less than you. There are people that you are ahead of in your knowledge base!

What I learned From Shakespeare

I have nothing against Shakespeare, but it wasn’t something I pursued. Well, wouldn’t you know that on my first student teaching job I had to teach Hamlet? Now Hamlet is a big, complicated play. It was daunting to present this to a bunch of students not feeling like I really knew the play or how to teach it. Teaching Shakespeare and making it interesting for high schoolers is hard enough as it is! I was only 10 years older than them. Who am I to teach this to these kids?

What I did know was how to take something and make it approachable and appealing to someone else. My mentor teacher stepped in and told me “You don’t have to know this play inside and out to get them to learn. You just have to be a step ahead of them.” This same advice applies to business and your ideas. I’m still not an expert in Shakespeare, but I got better at staying a step ahead of them and making is accessible to my students.

You Don’t Have To Be The Expert

You don’t need a background of 25 years in your field to put your idea out there into the world. You have your experiences and your knowledge that can be accessible to other people. Why get caught up in the “I can’t start my business because I don’t have this or that”? There is someone out there that will find you accessible and you can help!

Give Yourself Permission To Suck

When we first begin anything, we’re going to suck at it. Whether it’s cooking, crafting, or starting your business. There’s going to be challenges and things that we have to learn as we go. That’s part of life, and that’s part of developing your business. They aren’t excuses for you not to start something. How are you going to learn how to do something if you never get up and do it?
