What If It Could Be Easy?

marketing advice
My son got paid an extra TWENTY BUCKS for showing up to work 15 minutes early - and I had a mental reaction to that!
I wanted him to give it back!
Why should he earn money so easily?
And before I opened my mouth, I thought about advice I give to my clients all the time:

WHAT IF IT COULD BE EASY?

Is there shame in it being easy?

One of the questions that I ask my clients all the time is what would feel easier.

Sometimes they're just like, "Well, why should it be easy?"

Is it shameful to choose the easy way or the lazy way?

And easy equals lazy?

And so a lot of my clients and myself included, make things harder

because maybe there's more valor in that, or there's more courage in that, or there's more respect or value in that.

I want you to start thinking about where you choose hard things because way back in your past, somebody told you that.

Last week I picked up my son from work, and he got paid an extra 20 Bucks for showing up to work 15 minutes early.

It was just like a bonus his very generous boss gave him and he told me that while he had this huge grin on his face.

He's like, "They gave me an extra 20 Bucks!"

And I was like, "Why?"

"Because I got to work early today."

Do you know why he got to work early?

Because he didn't want to sit in the car and chat with me until nine.

Also we got there early because the Duckin' Donuts line wasn't big.

So I'm like, "You didn't have anything to do with it!"

These are the thoughts going through my head, and he's just so excited about the extra 20 Bucks.

Right?

And I'm thinking...

Let me pull over.

He can give that money back.

He didn't really earn it.

What?

What's he going to think that's just easy to make money.

And like, all my money garbage started to come up.

Thank you.

All my money garbage started to come up.

maybe he shouldn't think that he could make 20 dollars.

No problem.

Is he going to think that earning money is easy because earning money is hard.

Like all this garbage from my own childhood, 20's, 30's, and 40's.

It all came up and I didn't say anything to him.

And it was really a moment for me to think, "Oh, all the stories about money that I have in earning that I have come up into my business."

But what if it could be easy for the next generation of kids?

Like, what if Jack just grew up thinking, yeah, I could have a job that I love.

I don't have to work that shitty job.

That is the first crappy job that I have to slog through.

Like, what if it could be easy and fun to make money on?

If, like, making money was super easy?

And so it just was something I want you to think about.

Where do your old stories keep you from letting things be easy?

One of the ways that I see this is in content creation.

Like, content creation does not have to be hard.

People make it hard because they constantly reinvent the wheel.

They think that they have to be in every single platform doing every single thing.

If you don't like email, why are you doing email?

I think email is great and important, but why are you doing that?

You don't like to be on video.

Is it important?

I think so!

But maybe you baby step before you get there.

Why are you trying to make it your life partner?

So in content creation, it really could be easier.

Just like with making money, it really could be easier.

And whatever we have about stories, whatever stories we have about that, we really have to first examine them and not judge them and then rework them.

Because until we move through the story, and we can't do that until we see it.

So I'm curious.

Where are you finding things hard in your business?

I bet a big one for you is marketing.

I don't want to be seen.

If I get more business, I'm going to have to work harder, and I can't work any harder right now.

Content creation needs to be a slog.

It needs to take you four or 5 hours a week.

It doesn't.

But where are you making things harder?

What if it could be easy?

What if it could be fun?

What if you only had to do the things for content creation that you wanted to do?

That's it.

And that might mean I just have a message that's really clear, and I go out, and I network with people because I'm a high extrovert.

That might be the content creation that you do.

That might be the way that you market your message.
