What If You Did It Differently?

The idea first came to me in 1996 on a downtown bus.

A young Manhattanite on the verge of being done with city life, I was lost.

What was next?

Sick of climbing 6 flights to my 450 sq. ft. apartment…

Tired of a pre-war bathroom with no sink

Done with the brutal loneliness, fantasizing about another city would solve these problems.

{It didn’t]

In a contemplative mood, I watched my fellow bus-riders…reading, listening to Walkmans, looking at the cityscape.

My eyes rested on an older woman reading Moby Dick. I wondered, “Why would anyone choose to read that?!”

Instantly, I mentally transported to 11th grade, when I was prolific fiction reader.

Even I thought Moby Dick was horrible. I pondered Ms. Wulf - who foisted this book upon us.

Why did she make us read that? It was so awful!

Thanks to good ol’ Cliff’s Notes, I never actually READ it.

Mentally back on the bus, I considered ALL the books teenagers have thrust upon them. Books that don’t feel relevant to their lives - difficult to navigate for many high schoolers.

What if teachers could teach fiction DIFFERENTLY?
What if the strategy wasn’t “read a chapter; take a quiz”?

Was this possible?

At that moment, a thought popped in: WHAT IF YOU COULD DO IT BETTER, Jen?

What if you could teach kids in a way that made them INTERESTED?

Though I was young, 26, and didn’t believe much in myself, somehow this thought lodged in my brain:

What if you could do it YOUR WAY, Jen?

I played with this thought for two years, until I got the gumption to apply to graduate school & become a teacher.

I’m not embarrassed to say that I was a REALLY fricken’ good teacher.

I loved teaching - and would still be doing it if I never had to grade another epically shitty essay.

That was me. These were my thoughts for YEARS. Until I remembered that moment in the bus.

What if I could do it DIFFERENTLY? What if I could do it MY WAY?

Instead of looking at what you don’t like & making it mean “all marketing sucks…”
