You Can Stop Wasting Time on Mental Gymnastics!

Remember my little love affair with resistance? When I had to go gluten-free - for the health of it?

CONFUSION showed up BIG TIME!

When I realized I needed to make the changes that my nutritionist had suggested, I understood quickly that I didn’t know HOW.

I’d go the grocery store & wander around thinking, What the hell is gluten? Will I never eat another piece of bread again?

And then, Is gluten in other foods - not just bread?

THEN came NEGOTIATING with myself: “Ok, well it’s Sunday. I’ll just have pasta today and start over again on Monday.”

There was now a sneakiness to eating - I’d tell myself I could have the bagel and deal with the outcome later. If no one saw me eat it, I could feel less guilty.

OMG. This resistance to going gluten free was exhausting. It took up a LOT of my time & mental space.

However, I discovered there IS another way to make changes.

For evidence, I present to you...my husband.

About two months after I saw my nutritionist for the first time and was supposed to give up gluten so I could feel better…

My husband John got the diagnosis of Celiac Disease in February 2012.

His doctor said, ‘No more gluten for you.”

And this is what John said: “Sigh. OK.”

Then he never touched another beer, bun, or bagel ever again.

Honestly, friend. Which way sounds easier?

We stay in resistance because we don’t want to do the hard thing.

You’ll find resistance in lots of different types of hard things: planning, making decisions, or taking risks.

Our brains tell us why something is hard…offering examples of why we should NOT do something.

My brain got very busy telling me why I should IGNORE an expert’s advice & experience and instead refute, refuse, and negotiate with myself constantly.

When we rebel against doing something that’s truly in our best interest - something that will ultimately serve us - it’s called resistance.

And though it doesn’t seem like it at first, resistance keeps us from taking chances or having ease. We refuse to plan, move forward, or try something new.

What are YOU currently resisting?

We all have an area of our lives that we don’t want to make changes to - even though it would serve us & move us toward our goals.

Notice what your particular strain of resistance looks like - for me, it’s resentment & fear. I feel it in my gut and my brain gets VERY noisy.

This wastes a LOT of time & energy.

  • Are you wasting time & energy with your own mental gymnastics?
  • Do you know you need to make a change or take a risk in order to get what you want?
  • Have you admitted to yourself yet that you’re doing that?

  1. What do you want?
  2. What’s in your way?

In other words, what’s the uncomfortable shit you have to do in order to achieve that goal?

Most likely, you already know what this is> but the biggest problem in your way is your own thoughts. Thoughts that keep you stuck like,

  • Why is this happening to me?
  • I don't’ know how to do this.
  • This feels much too hard.
  • Other people don’t have to deal with this shit.
  • Why is this happening to me?

You can only move forward when you get out of victim mode & start creating the thing you want.

Notice whether you’re experiencing these feelings: Resentment. Fear. Confusion. Sadness. Guilt. Apathy.

If you’re squashing anything down, I promise you you’re not moving toward your goal.

I also promise you it will come back up and bite you in the ass at some point.

The things we want don't “go away”:

Stop bullshitting yourself. Stop pushing down your goal.

You can create the time to get it.

You can master your thoughts to work FOR you.

You can reach your goals.

You just have to get out of resistance.
