The breakDOWN before the breakTHROUGH: Why I wasn’t being productive in my business

marketing advice

Do you ever feel like everything you want to bring to life in your business takes sooooo freakin’ long?

Not only is there just a lot to do to make something real…

But the struggle of having to sort through too many ideas is real & has been plaguing me for MONTHS now.

Having too many ideas feels as bad as having zero ideas -

Because either way: I’m not productively moving toward my goals.

A bazillion ideas wanted to come to life this spring, and they all percolated through winter in one hellish swarm….

It was a cluster, but I wanted clarity.

The worry was: will I do ZERO things this spring because I can’t get any of it out of my head?

Has this ever happened to you?

I walked around feeling energized by the various ideas & directions I could go…

AND exhausted because they were all too slippery to get down on paper!

My brain buzzed with ideas I couldn’t nail down.

To get clarity & take action, I had a great idea: get out of the 5-degree misery that is Syracuse in February & take myself to Florida.

I fantasized about sitting outside, listening to the ocean, and watching ALL THE IDEAS simply FLOW out of my brain!

The relaxing that would make the difference, right?!

(Successful people say they do this: step away, relax & the ease shows up!)

The Universe must’ve had a giant laugh at my plan because the OPPOSITE happened.

I sat outside. On my ass. With my computer on my lap.

I listened to the waves crash & marveled at how many personalities the ocean has in a day.

I expected SO MUCH from myself because, “DAMMIT! I’m relaxing! LET THE IDEAS COME!”

NOPE.

NOTHING.

I felt rage & resentment as self-disappointment consumed me; I was irritated with my brain.

Every day was a battle to sit with my laptop or just go freakin’ enjoy the town.

To push through or do what felt like give up.

I compromised, spending ¾ of the day “working” and the other ¼ biking, walking, sleeping, or eating.

I called it “fun”. What a bullshit artist.

My ideas remained too unclear to gel and too numerous to sort through.

But still I sat at my stupid laptop, in front of the ocean, insisting to myself that I was having fun & relaxing.

Nothing made sense in my head, on paper, or on Google docs.

On the last day, I silently screamed FUCK IT and put my computer away.

I read The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, learned how to WORDLE, and rode my old lady touring bike all over Vero Beach…fantasizing about my future life in an ocean town.

The day I left, instead of expecting to work on the plane, I listened to podcasts, watched Hacks

(holy crap! HAVE YOU SEEN THIS SHOW? So good!)

…and finished another book!

Wednesday, back at home in Syracuse, the frustration was GONE.

EVERYTHING I’d been trying to gel poured out of my brain the moment I sat at my desk.

The programs I want to share.
The collaborations I want to participate in.
The free training I’m lining up for you.
The content needed to make it all work.

BOOM. It just all came clear.

Hello, productivity! I’ve missed you so much!

It’s like I needed to have a breakDOWN before I could have a breakTHROUGH.

This breakdown before a breakthrough has happened this before, many times.

Why do I forget, every time?

I forget that irritation & panic (for me) means I’m about to give birth to a new thing, idea, program, workshop, offer.

WHATEVER I want to create is always preceded by a lot of discomfort.

It occurs to me that being pregnant with my son was highly uncomfortable too, and I had to wait 9 months for his sweet face to arrive.

I guess 4 weeks isn’t so bad for a gestational period!

When will I trust myself  that the thing eventually gets out of my brain, but not until I dis-attach from it and give it space.

Do you ever panic about ALL the things you want to bring to life in your business?

  • The programs or products you want to bring to life.
  • The website & About Me pages that need updating.
  • The new lead magnet you want to create - plus the welcome sequence
  • The course you’ve got living in your head that you want to sell

^^These are the things that feel beyond the scope of the everyday running of your business.

Not to mention the things we don’t have time for but know we need:

  • Pitches to guest on other people’s podcasts.
  • Requests for reviews from clients.

Consider the TIME it takes for something to gel in our minds…

PLUS all the feelings we feel in dealing with THAT…

THEN we actually have to put it together! Make it happen. Do the planning. The writing. The tech…

OY the TECH!

Then…marketing it!

OY the MARKETING!!!

It’s exhausting, overwhelming, and might put you on PAUSE.

THIS is why I created the Content Creator’s Mastermind

It’s a small group, high-touch program to help you MOVE THE NEEDLE on something in your business.

It could be as foundational as “I want to set up & create my entire content dashboard” to…

“I want to create a new lead magnet & all the welcome emails that go with it”.

That’s the kind of stuff we do in there. I have 2 spots available for our next cohort starting in May.

I put spots on my calendar to talk about it 1:1 with you - and when you join before April 1st , you get the Content Creator’s Studio for 5 months included!

When you are overfull with ideas, you must

Be patient with yourself…

Trust that they will reveal themselves when it’s time…

Remember that pushing through never works (unless you’re giving birth to an actual baby. In my experience, pushing was necessary!)
